Four-time Juno award winner and recipient of the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Toronto Musicians’ Association, Neil Swainson is among the most respected and accomplished bassists on the jazz scene today. Born in Victoria, BC, Neil discovered the acoustic bass in high school and primarily taught himself how to play. From 1975 to 1977, he toured Canada with one of the early pioneers of new age music, the flutist Paul Horn. Soon after, Neil relocated east to Toronto where for the next decade, he worked with such Canadian jazz masters as Rob McConnell, Ed Bickert, Moe Koffman and Peter Appleyard. During this time he was also the bassist of choice for many visiting American musicians including saxophonists James Moody, George Coleman, Lee Konitz, Sonny Stitt and Joe Farrell, pianists Jay McShan, Tommy Flanagan, Joanne Bracken, and guitarists Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis. Internationally, Neil frequently shared the stage with the innovative and dynamic trumpeter Woody Shaw, touring Europe with him in 1985 and again 1987. He recorded two albums with him: In My Own Sweet Way (In’n Out), and Solid (Muse). Both Shaw and tenor sax legend Joe Henderson were featured on Neil’s 1989 debut album, 49th Parallel (Reel To Real Recordings), and showcased five Swainson compositions. Valued for his intuitive accompanying skills, harmonic depth, technical prowess and stylistic versatility, Neil also caught the ear of the great, British pianist George Shearing, who invited him to join his band. Neil appeared on over a dozen recordings with the pianist, and together they worked with Canadian composer and arranger Robert Farnon, singers Mel Tormé, Nancy Wilson, Joe Williams and Diana Krall Swainson has found a home on Cellar Music to record his original material that has resulted in two critically acclaimed recordings: Fire Out West and Here For A While both of which feature pianist RENEE ROSNES, trumpeter BRAD TURNER and saxophonist KELLY JEFFERSON. The Jimi James Fraser Sextet is a Vancouver-based jazz ensemble led by pianist and composer Jimi James Fraser. Founded in 2019, the group blends original compositions with inventive takes on the hard bop tradition, drawing inspiration from Art Blakey, Horace Silver, and Vancouver’s VEJI. Lucas Dubovik is an award-winning Canadian saxophonist and composer whose work reflects a distinctive voice in contemporary jazz. Known for his expressive tone and dynamic compositional approach, he has performed at major festivals and collaborated with artists including Caity Gyorgy, Jacob Wutzke, and Ira Coleman. His albums Quarterlife (2024) and Bridges to Nowhere (2021) highlight his evolving artistry. For this performance, he is joined by David Caballero - bass, Nicholas Bracewell - drums, and Max Huberdeau - piano.
After an extended hiatus due to a vocal injury, Steve Maddock makes his return to Frankie's for an evening of music fittingly called "The Comeback!" Steve is delighted to be joined by good friends Miles Black (piano), Bill Coon (guitar), Steve Holy (bass), and Kristian Braathen (drums), all of whom played a role in fostering his return to the bandstand.
Saxophonist Steve Kaldestad puts together a fantastic quartet featuring pianist Tilden Webb, bassist Conrad Good, and John Lee drums. He welcomes trumpeter Thomas Marriott to join the band. Marriott is a Pacific Northwest treasure. Stereophile Magazine says “Marriott is living proof that not all the best trumpeters in America live in New York” and the Seattle PI boasts “A trumpet player whose music can fit into any decade, he is both historically traditional and in the moment.” Steve has called Vancouver home since 2008 after long stints living and performing in London (UK) and Montreal. He has recorded four CDs for the Cellar Music label, the most recent being “Live at Frankie’s Jazz Club". Steve is a full-time faculty member at Capilano University in North Vancouver.
